Overview

Every August, Edinburgh turns into Festival city. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival of its kind in the world.

The Edinburgh Fringe offers thousands of shows in venues, pubs, old churches and on the streets throughout the city. The Fringe has no selection committee and offers a wide range of performances, including theatre, comedy, drama, music, spoken word, dance and magic as well as artistic street performances around the Royal Mile.

It was originally founded in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, but is now Edinburgh’s largest festival with an estimated 2,298,090 tickets sold in 2015. The population of the city doubles while visitors and locals enjoy the Fringe.
